Skywatch Friday - Stormclouds Building

Italy has has disastrous weather over the last week or so. Hailstorms, thunderstorms and lightning strikes, high winds and tornadoes have caused five deaths and considerable damage.

The worst weather, however, has been in the south, and although the north has been hit, we've missed most of it. Temperatures have been lower than usual with cool breezes, but the storm that is building in these pictures was about the worst of it, and it brought no more than an hour or so of heavy rain.

The cloud started to build at about 8pm. These photos were all taken in the next five to ten minutes, from the back balcony.

You can find links to more Skywatch Friday posts on the Skywatch site. Of those posted so far, my favourite this week are these photos of the midnight sun in Finland. I lived there for a year once, and the photo brought back memories of parties by the lake at 2am ... Super.

I love to watch storm clouds. But hate it when it gets so destructive.

Terrific shots of some really spooky looking, stormy clouds! I visited Milan many years ago. Beautiful city.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh wow... I had no idea the weather in Italy was that bad this week. I wonder how Sicily is doing? I'll have to email my friends there!

Rather photograph it than be in it. Powerful images.

There are bad weather warnings out for the West Country. That is, everywhere but Cornwall. We arn't goig to have rain until the middle of next week at least! But I won't be sorry to miss thunder and heavy rain. Not good for tiny plants and seedlings! Val

Looks very threatening. Nice to watch but not so good when it does damage. Hope it settles soon.

Oh Sue, what a turn-up for June in Milan....a good storm can be exciting and refresh everything unless there's flooding and damage.

We had an unprecedented heatwave and now temperatures 10-12 degrees lower with fresh westerly winds. We could do with a good storm.
